Well, on a dismal and stormy day, I decided to finally play around with my new camera, a Fuji Finepix S6000fd. It's a 6MP unit that's basically just one step down from a baseline DSLR, with the main difference being that I can't change the lens. Has all sorts of nifty features including the ability to manually control just about everything (shutter speed, f-stop, focus, white point, etc.), which I really like.

First up is a shot that came about when I set the camera on Will & Carla's mantelpiece to take the dorky pic you'll see at the end of the post. When I set the camera on the mantel, I noticed that Carla's Jack-o-lantern votive holders formed a pleasing and moderately compelling composition with a little tweaking. I've always enjoyed doing photos in B&W, hence the conversion...

Next up is a photo taken out of the dining room window, inspired by and taken for the fabulous Carla, lover of all things botanical...

Whilst the housemates have been off in Hilton Head gamboling in the sun and surf since Saturday, I have been playing caretaker to their feline overlords. Sheba has contented herself with perching on the back of the couch in Will's office, seemingly not to have moved from that spot in the past 4 days. I've even taken to occasionally prodding her just to reassure myself about her continued mobility... She gets up, walks a foot or so while reproaching me vocally and with a scathing stare (she's quite adept at scathing stares, and almost as facile with disdaining glares). Then, she just as vocally demands pettin's, as is her due. What can I do but comply?

The other catbeing, on the other hand, had a small medical procedure performed last week when the evil hairless monkey-men took him to the vet to have a toe removed due to some suspicious growths that could have caused fairly serious problems in the future. Thus our little lord Tennyson has been walking around with a bandaged foot and an ever-so-stylish elizabethan collar, thus earning him the moniker (from me, at least) of "Konehead Kitty." The good news is that his Monday visit to the vet resulted in a bandaging that he has yet to thwart as he did with the previous 4 bandaging attempts since Friday. Yay! (freaking houdini cat)

I just saw a television commercial for one of the candidates for the U.S. Senate for Pennsylvania, incumbent candidate Senator Rick Santorum. Instead of discussing Senator Santorum's political stance or qualifications, the commercial instead focuses on the somewhat disappointing work attendance record of his opponent, Bob Casey Jr. in his tenure as the State Treasurer of Pennsylvania.

What the Santorum campaigners don't seem to realize is that as a gay man, a man with faith in logic and science, and a generally decent human being, I would rather vote for an absentee Senator than one who actively works against my interests.

Can I get some confirmation on this...? ;)

Well, as some of you may or may not know, I have decided to move back home to the South Jersey / Philadelphia area.
I had pretty high hopes when I moved out here to SF, but things just didn't pan out the way I'd hoped. I didn't realize what the job market was like out here for graphic designers in the post-dotcom days. There are a decent amount of jobs out there to be had, but graphic designers are a dime-a-dozen out here and most of them are jockeying for each position that comes up. For each opening that gets posted, employers get flooded with 200+ resumes within a day or two. So, after a year and a half here, I concede defeat. LOL
Anyway, I have been sending out resumes to companies back east, have had a few phone interviews, but no offers just yet. I can't commit to a date to move just yet, as I have nowhere to live back there and most places won't rent to someone without a demonstrable source of income. I have made solid plans for a visit back east from March 4-11 to try and set up some face-to-face interviews with some of the companies I've talked with. Hopefully, one of them will make me an offer and I can get the ball rolling.
As always, keep your eyes and ears open for anyone looking to hire graphic designers! :)

Weird dream experiences...

I had an interesting thing happen to me this morning...I can't remember if anything quite like it has happened in a long time. I seem to have been dreaming about a song that one of my best friends used to sing when we would do karaoke... It's a George Strait song called "I Can Still Make Cheyenne" and it's a rather sad song, but in the dream it seemed even sadder and meant something slightly different than it does in real life.

In the dream, a bunch of us (one of those generic groups of people who aren't anyone in particular that you know in real life but that you know in the dream...know what I mean? *grin*) were standing around in the dream and one girl started to sing the first verse and then stopped, complaining that she could not sing it. The group started asking me to sing it, but I didn't want to because it was too sad. The group wheedled and cajoled and I gave in. In an almost music-video-esque way, the strains of the music came up and I started to sing. As the song went on, I felt more and more moved, and by the last few lines of the song, tears were running down my cheeks. It was at this point that I made the slow transition to wakefulness. Now comes the strange part...

As I slowly gained consciousness, I found myself humming the song and my eyes were welling with tears. Apparently I was singing/humming and crying in my sleep. I don't think that's ever happened to me before, although I can't be sure without witnesses LOL.

In spite of such a unique start to the day, I find myself in very good spirits and am looking forward to the rest of the day. :)
